Four-day Memorial Day celebration includes memorial service, parade, carnival

Times Herald Staff

Members of the American Legion Auxiliary Eick-Sankey Unit 302 plan to plant red geraniums around the memorial stone starting at 1 p.m. May 24 at the Oconto Falls Woodlawn Cemetery; rain date is Friday, May 25.

Anyone wishing to donate geraniums to honor or memorialize a loved one may bring them to 199 Highland Drive, Oconto Falls, no later than May 23. They can also be brought to the cemetery that Thursday. Include a note saying who is donating the geranium and who is being honored or memorialized. Please make sure they are red, as this makes for a more uniform and beautiful effect around the stone.

Red geraniums may be purchased from the Oconto Falls High School greenhouse to help the horticulture and agriculture class fundraiser. Sale hours are 3-7 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Fridays and 8 a.m. to noon Saturdays through May 24.

The memorial stone is the centerpiece of the annual American Legion Post 302 and Auxiliary Memorial Day service, which is scheduled for 10 a.m. May 28 in the cemetery, 844 S. Main St., Oconto Falls.

The Panther Pride Association is again hosting the community’s four-day Memorial Day Celebration starting May 25, centered at Memorial Field, where Christman Amusement of Wautoma will set up its carnival Friday night through Monday.

The weekend’s events include a modified-pitch softball tournament all weekend; the Dash O.F. Color run 9-11 a.m. Saturday; fireworks at dusk Saturday (rain date Sunday); a bean-bag tournament at 4 p.m. Sunday; and the Show-N-Shine Car and Truck Show on Monday.

Bands will perform 7-11 p.m. Saturday and Sunday night – Renegade on Saturday (with a break for the fireworks) and Sunny and the Heat on Sunday.

The annual Memorial Day Parade is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. through downtown Oconto Falls; line-up will begin at 11 a.m. along Sherman Street. A Big Bike Giveaway for kids is again planned at the old football field after the parade.

Float prizes are $350 for first place, $250 for second place and $150 for third.
